With the element name/symbol quiz behind us, we are continuing our investigation into solutions.
Part 1: To determine precise amount of solute (NaCl) that can be dissolved in a specific amount of solvent (H2O). The students used various lab equipment as they measured the mass of the solvent and gradual solute being added. They stopped adding solute once the solution became saturated (When crystals start to gather at bottom of the test tube).
Part 2: Do all solutes dissolve similarly? (Solubility). The students will then do the same procedure with a new solute (Sugar).
Part 3: Students compare results and determine solubility rates for both solutes.
Discussion about why this skill is worth knowing.
