Directional vs. Mechanical Advantage

Notes from class

Directional Advantage - A D.A. is said to exist when the effort is being pulled in a downward direction. When the effort is going with gravity, a person will account for a little less than he/she would if pulling the same in an upwards direction.

Mechanical Advantage - A M.A. is said to exist if the amount of effort force needed to lift a load is less than the resistance force of the load. In pulleys, the M.A. can be determined by the number of support strings that assist in pulling up the load.

Real World Connect: Discussion about a mom and a dad walking with their child between them. Each parent holds a hand and the child wants to swing between them. How much of the child's weight is the dad responsible for? How much for mom?
