Today's Agenda:
- DO NOW: Explain how a playground seesaw works
- Discuss Homework (Peter Piper's Pepper Plants and Sally's Sugar Story)
- Review Volume Lab from Monday/Tuesday
- Jack's Bean Plants
- Intro to Levers
The students are learning the routine of class and are doing a great job. Today, I had some students come up to the board and be the "substitute teacher" for the Do Now. They explained the concept of the seesaw and fielded questions from the class. I was so proud of the 9 or 10 students that did this today. The students who didn't were terrific participants in the discussion to the point where I could do this often and have success. I enjoy the students taking ownership in the class and in their education.
We then moved towards homework. We shared the identified parts of the scientific method in both homework scenarios.
Next, we looked at the mini lab that we worked on last class in which the students were to measure water and follow directions to accurately reach a desired outcome. We discussed why our numbers didn't always resemble those groups around us, and to take comfort in the fact that it may have happened because of a circumstance we can't necessarily control. It's great habit to reflect on why the data doesn't always come out the way we think it should or as it did for others.
Did Jack's Bean Plants...another scientific method practice sheet (Quiz next week on Scientific Method - it will consist of a scenario just like these where they have to idenitfy the parts of the experiment...nothing more...nothing less) They kept all the practice scenarios in their notebooks.
Finally, we dug into our actual content...Simple Machines. The first one we focus on is Levers. We did an intro to the parts of a lever and then we proceeded to move into the class demo. We used wood to construct a lever, and used textbooks to serve as "Effort Force". I don't want to get into too much detail at this point, because I don't want to ruin the experience for the students.
No HW tonight!!!
